Jain God Bahubali Statue
Lord Bahubali is the God of Jainism and he meditated in Kayotsarga's posture for a year so that creepers and plants grew on his body and insects made their home on his body. After doing hard penance for a year, he got only knowledge, and since then he was called Kevali. At last, he attained salvation, and he became free from the cycle of life and death. From then on he became the god of Jainism.
The idol of Lord Bahubali is one of the tallest stable idols in the world. This idol is made from blocks of granite. This idol is 57 feet high and is installed on Vindhyagiri mountain in Shravanabelagola, Karnataka in India. This idol is so high that it can be seen even from 30 km away. The name of Lord Bahubali is also Gomateshwara.
Lord Bahubali has the characteristics of peace, non-violence, renunciation of worldly attachment, and living a simple life after Jainism. One of the two hills of Shravanabelagola is Vindhyagiri mountain and the other is Chandragiri mountain which is a place of obsolete Jain sites and Bahubali is much older than the idol of God.
The idol of Gomateshwara is related to the Jain god Bahubali. This statue was made in about 983 CE and this idol is one of the permanent statues of the world. The idol of the Lord was made by the minister and general of the Ganga clan, Chavundaraya. There are Jain Temples in many areas called Basadis and there are idols of many Tirthankaras. In the second mountain of Shravanabelagola, Chandragiri, there is an idol of Lord Bharat who is the brother of Lord Bahubali and both the brothers are the sons of the first Jain Tirthankara Adinath.
An amazing view of the surrounding areas can be seen from the top of the mountain. People come from far and wide to perform Mahamastakabhisheka of Lord Bahubali and their Mahamastakabhisheka is done once in 12 years; the body is anointed with milk, saffron, ghee, sugarcane juice, turmeric, sandalwood, etc. Lord Bahubali's next consecration will take place in 2030. The Times of India report in 2007 stated that the idol of Lord Bahubali is one of the seven wonders of India and 49% of the total votes went in his favor.
ETHOLOGY
The appearance of the idol of Lord Bahubali shows the long attention span. In the Kayotsarga posture, the moving thought raised the climbing vines around the feet. In the idol of Lord Bahubali, his hair is curly and waxed, and his ears are big. His eyes are wide open as if he is looking at the whole world with a flutter. The makeup on his face has been made with a lot of thought and the slight smile on his lips is a symbol of peace of mind and the power to live life. His shoulders are wide and his arms are pulled down.
There is a Bambi under the idol of God, which is the symbol of his penance. A creeper emerges from the ground, which grows like a rope around the legs and arms of the idol of God, and is completed in the form of a creeper in the arms. The whole figure is standing on an open lotus symbolizing the fulfillment of setting up this unique idol. Two gods are standing on either side of the idol of God, in which the name of the first god is Yaksha, and the name of the second god is Yakshini. These magnificent and wonderfully carved sculptures in the rich form are helpful to the particular idol. The rear part of the Bambi has a pool for collecting water and religious materials used for the consecration of the carved idol.
STORY
According to the story, after setting up the idol of Lord Bahubali, Chavundaraya arranged for Mahamastakabhisheka to be performed on the idol of the Lord, which had five types of material such as milk, coconut, sugar, nectar, and the water collected in many vessels. But the liquid could not flow under the navel of the idol. Chavundaraya could not understand why the fluid was not flowing under the navel of the idol; then a poor old lady brought some milk to anoint the Lord and everyone was making fun of him but she still anointed the idol of God. Seeing that the milk started becoming like a river, Chavundaraya's arrogance was also suffocated and made those people anoint the Lord by apologizing to that elderly woman and also to all the people, rich and poor. Since then everyone anoints the idol of Lord Bahubali.
